How to raise a concern about your personal information.
UK data-protection law now requires organisations to provide a clear process for handling data-protection complaints. This procedure explains how to complain to GAM Tax and what you can expect.
1. When to use this procedure
Use this procedure if you believe GAM Tax has not handled your personal information in accordance with data-protection law — for example, because of how information was collected, used, shared, secured, retained or how a data-protection rights request was handled.
A complaint about the quality or price of an accountancy service that does not concern personal information is a service complaint and should be raised separately.
2. How to make a complaint
Email info@gamtax.co.uk with the subject “Data protection complaint”, or contact us using the details on the Contact page. You do not need to quote legislation.
Please explain what happened, the information or activity you are concerned about, any relevant dates or correspondence, and what you would like us to do. Only send evidence that is relevant to the concern.
3. What GAM Tax will do
- acknowledge the data-protection complaint within 30 days;
- take appropriate steps to investigate the issues raised;
- seek clarification where reasonably needed;
- keep you informed of progress where appropriate; and
- provide an outcome without unjustifiable or excessive delay, explaining the decision and any action taken where appropriate.
We may need to verify your identity before disclosing personal information. We will keep a record of the complaint and how it was handled for accountability purposes.
4. Rights requests made at the same time
If your complaint also contains a request to exercise a data-protection right — for example, a subject access, rectification or erasure request — that rights request has its own legal timetable. Valid rights requests are generally handled without undue delay and within one calendar month, subject to the applicable rules on identity checks, clarification and extensions.
5. If you are unhappy with the outcome
You can ask GAM Tax to explain or reconsider any point you believe has not been addressed. You may also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). The ICO generally recommends giving the organisation an opportunity to complete its complaint process first.
Current ICO complaint information is available at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.
